The John Hope Gateway
Award winning sustainable building - Home to the Gateway Restaurant.

image The John Hope Gateway building was opened in October 2009. Designed by Edward Cullinan Architects, it has been built with sustainability in mind and to that end, has many award winning and inspirational elements within its design and construction.

The main purpose of the building is to provide a centre of interpretation for visitors to the Garden, outlining the main focuses of the Garden's scientific, research and horticultural teams and providing a window into the world of botany and biodiversity. The building hosts exhibitions and events for all ages throughout the year and is open every day except Christmas Day and New Year's Day.

The building acts as the main west gate entrance to the Garden and from within, visitors are able to meander through the shop and exhibitions on the ground floor before ascending our unusual spiral staircase (or lift) to the restaurant area on the first floor.

The Gateway Restaurant

The Gateway Restaurant is an integral part of our visitor experience, with our menu and relaxed service perfectly complementing the award winning architecture and stunning views out into the Garden. The tables in our restaurant were designed and created by local furniture designer Ben Dawson, their unusual design is enhanced by the fact they are made from Beech, Oak, Ash or Sycamore sourced within Scotland. The restaurant is hardly noticeably separated from the outside Garden by a 30 meter long wall of glass complete with french doors opening out on to a lovely decked area. The decking provides alfresco seating for an additional visitors during the day whilst providing a superb outdoor covered space for evening barbecues and other events all year round overlooking the Biodiversity Garden.

The restaurant opens daily for breakfast at 10am with lunches served from midday and a sumptuous afternoon available from 2.30pm daily, all our food is prepared fresh on the premises by our kitchen team led by Ben Harrison and served to your table.

Our menus created by Ben, make full use of the produce available on our doorstep, with Red Tractor accredited meat products from across Scotland, seafood from around the Scottish coast and fresh berries in the Summer from Perthshire.

We cannot think of anything more "on our doorstep" than the fresh vegetables, salad leaves and fruit we use all year round directly from right here in the Garden, in addition to our strong relationship with the Edible Gardening Project, who supply us with many well known but also unusual varieties; we are also able to forage through the Garden for fruit during the late Summer and Autumn. Ben's Crab apple jelly is well worth waiting for.

The restaurant has a well stocked bar, with a selection of locally brewed beers and good range of wines, spirits and aperitifs.

The Gateway for Events

After the Garden closes each day; the John Hope Gateway can be transformed into a first class events complex, the ground floor becomes a significant reception space complete with its exhibits and presentations and can be utilised for as a dining space also.

The restaurant can be set up in a host of different layouts to meet the needs of any style or type of event, complete with the ability to extend your event and its footprint out onto the decking and beyond whilst also utilising the additional spaces at our disposal.
